Vocal folds are located in the middle zone of the glottis. The lower and upper vocal folds vibrate as air passes through. This produces sounds which are modulated by the brain to form words. If one stretches the vocal chords, it alters the pitch of the voice. These folds are controlled by the vagus nerve. Vocal folds are located in the larynx. Anteriorly the vocal fold is connected to the posterior side of the thyroid cartilage, and posteriorly the vocal fold is connected to the arytenoid cartilage.
