Description

This massive, block-like body has the shape of a kidney from above. The body is wider than it is deep and taller ventrally than dorsally. This creates the characteristic lumbar curve of the articulated vertebral column.

Etymology

The term body or its Latin equivalent corpus refers to the large central portion of a structure. This portion of the vertebra is also called the centrum, Latin for center.
