This element is only present in the four lateral digits. These are very short elements that are typically broader than their proximal namesakes. They have concave proximal ends and convex distal ends with very shortened, constricted shafts.
Etymology
Phalanges, plural for phalanx, is a Greek term that referred to a line of heavy-armed infantry drawn up in close order to do battle. The parallel digital rays resembled these lines of battle.
Articulations
The middle phalanges articulate with the proximal and distal phalanges.
Ossification
Each bone ossifies from two centers. The first center, more distal, typically arises during the fourth fetal month. A second center, more proximal, forms in the sixth to seventh year The two centers unite between the seventeenth and eighteenth year.
