Ala of sacrum

Description

The alae, or wing-like lateral processes of the sacrum, form from the fusion of the transverse and costal processes. The wings are wide in the anteroposterior plane superiorly becoming narrower inferiorly. They form the hyaline cartilage covered auricular surface laterally that forms the synovial joints with the os coxae.

Ala is Latin for wing.
