The body is the gently arching portion of the rib. This forms the largest portion of the bone comprising most of its length. It is flattened in the vertical plane, presenting a greater height than width. Its narrow borders provide attachment to the intercostal muscles. Its flat surfaces provide attachment to various other muscles. It tapers to a blunt point distally.
The term body or its Latin equivalent corpus refers to the large central portion of a structure.
