Description

The base of the bone is the expanded, quadrate-shaped proximal end. This end of the bone articulates with the medial cuneiform at its proximal surface.

Etymology

The word base comes from the Latin bassus meaning low. This, in turn, came from the Greek basis meaning a pedestal or foot. In anatomy, the term refers to the lowest part or foundation of a structure.
