Head of metatarsal 1
Other Terms: Distal end of metatarsal bone, Lower end of metatarsal bone, Head of metatarsal bone, Caput ossis metatarsi, Tête du métatarsien
The round, distal heads are large and prominent. The articular surface of the head is a rounded convex surface that is more narrow transversely. The smooth articular surface spreads further onto the plantar surface than it does on the dorsal surface. On the plantar surface, the head forms grooved facets for the sesamoid bones of the flexor hallucis brevis.
Head, or its Latin equivalent caput, refers to a rounded extremity on bone.
