Description
This is a shallow groove superior to the acetabulum that serves as an attachment site for the reflected tendon of the rectus femoris muscle.
Etymology
The term supra is Latin for superior to. Acetabulum is derived from the Latin acetum meaning vinegar and abulum for cup or bowl. Pliny, Celsus, and other early anatomists viewed the deep, bowl-like hip socket to resemble an open vinegar cup. Sulcus is Latin for groove or a hollow channel.
