Arcuate line of the ilium
Other Terms:
Linea arcuata ilii
Description
This is a rounded ridge-like line on the internal or medial surface of the ilium. It projects from the auricular apex posteriorly to the iliopectineal eminence anteriorly where it becomes continuous with the pectineal line. It serves as a boundary line between the true and false pelves. This arch of bone forms a compact bony buttress that strengthens the pelvis against the loads transferred from the femur to the sacrum.
Etymology
Arcuate comes from the Latin arcus meaning a bow or arch.
