Anterior superior spine
Description
This is the blunt projection at the anterior termination of the iliac crest. It forms the upper portion of the anterior margin of the iliac ala. Its apex provides attachment for the inguinal ligament and sartorius muscle, while its lateral and medial sides give attachment to the tensor fasciae latae and iliacus muscles, respectively. This spine is easily palpable inferiorly and laterally on the anterior abdominal wall.
Etymology
The word spine comes from the Latin spina meaning a thorn.
