Lesser sciatic notch

Description

This is the smaller, shallow notch on the posterior margin of the ischium, below the ischial spine and above the superior border of the tuberosity. This notch provides for the passage of the obturator internus tendon and nerve and the internal pudendal vessels and pudendal nerve.

Etymology

Sciatic is a contraction of the Latin term ischiadicus from the Greek ischion meaning hip joint. A notch refers to an indented region of bone, the Latin equivalent of the term being incisure.
