Transverse ligament of atlas

Other Terms: Transverse atlantal ligament, Ligamentum transversum atlantis, Ligament transverse de l'atlas

Parts

None

Group

Vertebral ligaments

Description

This is a strong, thick ligamentous band that, with the anterior arch of the atlas, creates a fibro-osseous ring around the dens of the axis. It passes posterior to the anterior arch of the atlas and the dens of the axis forming the fibrous part of the fibro-osseous ring. It attaches on each side to the medial aspect of the lateral mass of the atlas. The ligament becomes cartilaginous where it crosses the dens, otherwise it is a strong collagenous structure.

Function

Stabilizes the joint between the dens of the axis and the anterior arch of the atlas, allowing for the pivoting motion between these two bones.
