Synchondrosis of first rib
Other Terms: First sternocostal synchondrosis (synarthrosis), Synchondrosis sternocostalis costa prima, Synchondrosis of first rib, Synchondrosis costae primae, Synchondrose de la première côte
The first costal cartilage is always united to the sternum by a synchondrosis and has a very limited range of motion. The transversely flattened first rib terminates in a similarly shaped cartilage that is anchored firmly to the superolateral aspect of the sternum just beneath its articulation with the clavicle.
