Description

The first costal cartilage is always united to the sternum by a synchondrosis and has a very limited range of motion. The transversely flattened first rib terminates in a similarly shaped cartilage that is anchored firmly to the superolateral aspect of the sternum just beneath its articulation with the clavicle.
