Sternocostal joints and ligmaments
Other Terms:
Sternocostal ligmaments
Description
At the sternal end of the ribs the costal cartilages join to the boney rib and continue to attach to the sternum. Small, planar synovial joints exist between the costal cartilage and the sternum. These joints are surrounded by various thin sheets of ligaments that help to anchor the cartilaginous portion of the ribs to the sides of the sternum.
