Description
This is a fibrocartilaginous symphysis connecting the two pubic bones. It binds to thin plates of hyaline cartilage that cover the rugose symphyseal surfaces of the pubic bones. After puberty a non synovial cavity is usually present within the fibrocartilage symphysis. The anterior aspect of the disc is reinforced by a network of crossing fibers that blend with the periosteum of the pubic bones, the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscles, and the tendinous termination of the rectus abdominus muscles.
Function
Unites the os coxae via a junction of limited flexibility. In the female pelvis, this provides resilient expansion during child birth.
