Sacrotuberous ligament
Other Terms:
Ligamentum sacrotuberale,
Ligament sacrotubéral
Parts
Falciform process
Group
Lower limb joints - Pelvic girdle
Description
This strong ligamentous band begins as a broad attachment of various ligamentous slips from the posterior superior iliac spine, the transverse sacral tubercles, the lower lateral surface of the sacrum, and the upper lateral aspect of the coccyx. From this broad origin the ligament tapers into a strong, thick band that descends inferolaterally to attach to the medial surface of the ischial tuberosity. It sends a small sickle-shaped ligamentous band, the falciform process, forward along the superior margin of the ischial ramus.
Function
Stabilizes the pelvic girdle and limits upward titling of the sacrum and rotation of the pelvis.
Latin
Ligamentum sacrotuberale
