Joints and ligaments of the ...

Other Terms: Ligaments of the tarsal bones

Within the foot there are a number of intertarsal joints as well as joints between the tarsal bones and metatarsal bones. The subtalar joint is a modified spheroidal joint between the talus and the subjacent calcaneus posteriorly. More anterior in position is the transverse tarsal joint or talocalcaneonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints, which is a modified spheroidal joint. Other joints in this group include the various intertarsal plane joints between juxtaposed tarsal bones. Between the distal ends of the distal tarsal bones and the proximal ends of the metatarsal bones are the planar tarsometatarsal joints. A variety of strong, stout ligamentous bands unite and stabilize these different joints.
