Description
The metatarsophalangeal joints form between the rounded metatarsal head and the shallow cavity at the base of the proximal phalanx of the toes. The articular surfaces cover the end of the metatarsal head and extend onto the ventral surface of the head. The plantar surface of the first metatarsal articulates with two sesamoid bones. The joint capsule is thin and reinforced by surrounding ligaments.
