Anterior fontanelle

Other Terms: Fonticulus anterior

Description

The anterior fontanelle is the large membranous region in the fetal and newborn cranium that occupies the midline at the junction of the two parietal bones and two frontal bones. This is typically the last fontanelle to fuse during skull development. It is referred to as the “soft spot” on the newborn’s head.
