This is the space in the bone matrix that houses the osteocyte. These spaces can be easily viewed in the sections of bone as the cells have died and are no longer present in the dried, ground bone. Extending from the lacuna are numerous small channels, the canaliculi, that housed the arm-like extensions of the osteocytes.
Lacuna is the diminutive form of the Latin term lacus meaning lake. The diminutive form translates as a small pool. This is an apt term to describe the small pits in the hard matrix of bone that house the cells.
