The filiform papillae are the most numerous and the smallest of the tongue papillae. They are long, slender, conic, and branched at their free ends. They do not contain taste buds. They are made up of epithelium and elastic fibers. The elastic fibers make them firmer and more elastic than other papillae of the mucous membrane.
