Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the muscle that wrinkles above the eyelashes. The word corrugator comes from the Latin verb corrugare, which means “to wrinkle.” This in turn arises from the Latin con meaning “with” + ruga, which means a “wrinkle or fold.”The word supercilii comes from the Latin superus meaning “over or above” and cilium, which means a hairlike structure or eyelash. This probably goes back to the Greek killo meaning a “trembling or winking,” because of the rapid movements of the eyelashes.
Origin
Medial end of the superciliary arch of the frontal bone
Insertion
Skin beneath the middle of the eyebrow
Action
Works with the orbicularis oculi muscle to pull the eyebrows towards the midline and downward. When contracted it, along with the medial aspect of the orbicularis oculi and procerus, causes the skin between the eyebrows and above the nose to be thrown into a series of transverse wrinkles.
