Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the muscle of the pillar and the throat. The word stylohyoid can be divided into the Greek words stylos meaning “pillar” and the term pharynx, what is referred to as the throat, arises from the Greek pharangos meaning “cleft, gulley, or ravine.”
Origin
Base of the styloid process on the medial surface
Insertion
Passes between the superior and middle constrictors to attach to the tunica mucosa of the pharynx
Action
Elevates the pharynx.

Glossopharyngeal nerve (Cranial nerve IX)
Blood supply
The muscle receives blood from the pharyngeal branches of the ascending pharyngeal artery.
