Condylar fossa

Description

This is a shallow depression immediately posterior to the occipital condyles. It receives the posterior edge of the articular facets of the atlas when the head is fully extended.

Etymology

Condyle comes from the Greek word kondulos meaning knuckle or knob. Fossa comes from the Latin fodere meaning to dig. The Latin fossa literally translating as a ditch, trench, or hole.
