Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the muscle of the U-shaped bone and tongue. The term hyoid comes from its resemblance to the Greek letter upsilon (u), which is aspirated as hy. This is combined with the suffix eidos meaning “shape or form.” The word glossa is Greek for “tongue.”
Origin
Body and greater cornu of the hyoid bone; chondroglossal part from the lesser cornu
Insertion
Blends into the sides of the tongue between the styloglossus and inferior longitudinal muscles
Action
Depresses the tongue.
