Etymology

The English name for this muscle is the crosswise muscle of the tongue. The word linguae comes from the Latin lingua meaning “tongue.” The term transversus is Latin for “crosswise.””

Median lingual septum

Insertion

Submucosa at the lateral margin of the tongue

Action

Narrow and lengthen the tongue.

Nerve supply

Hypoglossal nerve (Cranial nerve XII)

Blood supply

Lingual artery from the external carotid artery and tonsillar artery from the first part of the facial artery.
