Other Terms: Eminentia cruciformis, Éminence cruciforme
This is a projection of bone on the concave internal surface of the occipital squama. It is situated at the intersection of transverse ridged grooves and vertically ridged grooves. These grooves support venous sinuses in the meningeal dura mater. The cross-shaped ridges projecting from this eminence divide the concave internal surface of the bone into two superior fossae for the occipital lobes of the two cerebral hemispheres and two inferior fossae for the cerebellar hemispheres.
From the Latin Crux meaning cross, therefore pertaining to the shape of a cross. The word eminence is a noun form of the Latin verb eminere meaning to project.
