Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the long muscle of the neck. Longus is the Latin term for “long.”The word colli comes from the Latin collum, which means the “neck.”
Origin
Anterior tubercles of 3rd to 7th cervical vertebrae and bodies of lower cervical and first three thoracic vertebrae
Insertion
Anterior surface of cervical vertebral bodies
Action
Flexes the neck and rotates it to the opposite side
Nerve supply
Branches from cervical ventral rami (C2, C3, C4, C5, and C6)
Blood supply
The muscle receives blood from the ascending cervical artery, which is a small branch of the inferior thyroid artery from the thyrocervical trunk of the subclavian artery. It also receives blood from the ascending pharyngeal artery.
