Etymology
In English, this muscle’s name is the crosswise muscle of the chest. The Latin term transversus means “crosswise” and comes from Latin trans meaning “across, beyond, or through” and the Latin verb vertere meaning “to turn.” The word thoracis comes from the Greek thorakos meaning “breast plate or chest.”
Origin
Inner lower portion of sternum and adjacent costal cartilages
Insertion
Lower border of sternal ends of ribs 2 through 6
Action
Depresses the ribs.

Intercostal nerves (T3 through T6)
Blood supply
These muscles receive their blood supply from the sternal branches and anterior intercostal branches of the internal thoracic artery via the subclavian artery.
