The English name for this muscle is the muscle under the rib. The word subcostal comes from the Latin terms sub meaning “under” and costa meaning “rib.”

Origin

Internal surface of rib near neck

Insertion

Internal surface of rib near angle two or three ribs superior to the origin

Action

Depress the ribs.

Intercostal nerves (T1 through T11)

Blood supply

Superior intercostal artery from the costocervical trunk of the subclavian artery. Posterior intercostal arteries from the aorta.
