Etymology

The muscle’s name in English is the square muscle of the loin. The word quadratus comes from the Latin quadrus meaning “square.” Lumborum comes from the Latin lumbus for “loin.”

Posterior iliac crest

Medial half of 12th rib and transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae

Action

Fixes 12th rib to stabilize diaphragm attachments during inspiration; lateral flexes the vertebral column, extends lumbar vertebrae

Nerve supply

Subcostal nerve (T12), iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerve (both from L1), and branches from the ventral rami (L2 and L3)

Blood supply

Subcostal artery; lumbar arteries; lumbar branch of the iliolumbar artery; artery lumbalis ima from the median sacral artery.
