Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the porous swelling muscle. The word bulbospongiosus arises from the Greek terms Greek bulbos meaning “swelling” and theGreek spongos meaning “porous.” Spongos is an ancient term that can be traced back to the Odyssey of Homer where porous, absorbent sponges were used to soak up the blood that resulted from Ulysses’ killing of the suitors of his wife.
Origin
Perineal body where they coverage with other external layer muscles and the tendinous median raphe.
Insertion
Attach onto the corpus spongiosum and onto the corpus cavernosum anterior to the ischiocavernosus; end in a dorsal aponeurosis that wraps around the dorsal vessels of the penis
Action
Compresses spongy urethra to help empty it; assists with erection; assists with ejaculation
Nerve supply
Perineal branches of the pudendal nerve (S2, S3, and S4)
Blood supply
Internal pudendal artery and its perineal branch from the internal iliac artery.
