Description

The levator ani is a thin sheet of muscle that forms the anterior two-thirds of the pelvic floor. It is divided into two named muscles the pubococcygeus and the iliococcygeus whose boundaries are not easily distinguished. The pubococcygeus can be further subdivided into numerous parts, which are named according to the pelvic viscera with which the part is associated.
