Etymology

Origin
Spinous processes of the vertebrae from T7 to the sacrum, the posterior iliac crest, and the external surface of the lower three ribs.
Insertion
Floor of the intertubercular groove of the humerus.
Action
Medial rotation, adduction, and extension of the humerus – unlike its close partner, the teres major, the muscle is active during any of these movements whether resisted or not.
