Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the muscle on the ulnar side that bends the wrist. The word flexor comes from the Latin flectere meaning “to bend.”Carpi is the genitive form of the Latin carpus meaning “wrist.”Ulnaris is used in reference to the muscle’s position on the ulnar side of the forearm. This term comes from the Latin ulna meaning “elbow,” which is derived from the Greek olene.
Origin
Medial epicondyle of humerus via the common flexor tendon (humeral head); medial side of the olecranon and the proximal half of the posterior ulnar shaft (ulnar head)
Insertion
Pisiform bone, hamate bone, anterior base of 5th metacarpal, and the flexor retinaculum
Action
Flexion of wrist; adduction (ulnar deviation) of wrist
Nerve supply
Ulnar nerve (C7, C8, and T1)
Blood supply
From proximal to distal, the belly of the muscle receives blood supply from the ulnar collateral arteries, the anterior and posterior ulnar recurrent arteries, and small muscular branches from the ulnar artery. The distal tendon receives its supply from the ulnar side of the superficial palmar arch.
