Description
While many of the antebrachial muscles terminate in the hand, the true, or intrinsic, hand muscles are a series of short muscles confined within the hand. The hand muscles are divided into three distinct groups – the thenar muscles surrounding the base of the thumb, the hypothenar muscles surrounding the metacarpal bone of the little finger, and the intermetacarpal muscles situated between and around the metacarpal bones. They all arise from the anterior muscle of the embryo and are innervated by the median and ulnar nerves.
