This is a distinct, rounded prominence on the superior surface of the petrous temporal bone. It sits about half-way between the petrosquamous suture and the apex of the bone. This rounded eminence marks the position of the anterior semicircular canal in the inner ear.
Arcuate comes from the Latin arcus meaning a bow or arch. The word eminence is a noun form of the Latin verb eminere meaning to project.
