Lower limb muscles

Other Terms: Inferior limb, Lower limb

Description

The muscles of the inferior limbs make up a large percentage of the body’s total mass. This varied group of muscles ranges from the largest muscles in the body, muscles involved in producing the powerful forces that power locomotion to very small muscles in the foot that produce very minor movements. The muscles of the inferior limb form distinct muscle groups that share structure and function in common. The groups are the proximal hip muscles consisting of deep hip rotators, hip flexors, and gluteal muscles, the muscles of the thigh consisting of three muscle compartments, the muscles of the crus consisting of three muscle compartments, and the muscles of the foot consisting of dorsal and plantar muscle groups.
