The English name of this muscle is the upper little twin muscle. The word gemellus is Latin for “little twin.” It comes from the Latin geminus meaning “twin” and the diminutive ending –llus or “little.”The Latin word superior comes from the Latin superus meaning “upper.”
Dorsal surface of the spine of the ischium.
Joins the upper edge of the obturator internus tendon to the medial surface of the greater trochanter of the femur.
Lateral rotation of the hip joint; helps abduct a flexed thigh.
Nerve to obturator internus (L5 and S1)
Blood supply is from the internal iliac artery via the superior and inferior gluteal arteries and the internal pudendal artery.
