Etymology
The muscle’s name in English is the square muscle of the thigh. The word quadratus comes from the Latin quadrus meaning “square.”The word femur is Latin for “thigh.”
Origin
Superior portion of the lateral surface of the ischial tuberosity.
Insertion
Tubercle above the middle part of the trochanteric crest on the posterior side of the femur.
Action
Lateral rotation of the hip.
Nerve supply
Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5 and S1)
Blood supply
The internal pudendal and inferior gluteal arteries supply the muscle from the internal iliac artery, while the lateral and medial circumflex femoral arteries supply blood from the femoral artery.
