Group
Crural muscle – lateral compartment
Etymology
The English name for this muscle is the short muscle of the pointed bone. The word peroneus is from the Greek perone meaning “anything sharp or pointed.” This was an alternate term for the fibula, which is a Latin word designating a “buckle or brooch.” It arises from the Latin word figo meaning “to fasten.” In some animals the bone is short and pointed at its distal end where it abuts the tibia. This appearance resembled a needle to its brooch.Brevis is the Latin term meaning “short.” This is being used as a comparative reference to a longer muscle that does the same thing.
Origin
Lateral surface of the distal 2/3rds of the shaft of the fibula and the anterior and posterior crural intermuscular septa.
Insertion
Tubercle on the lateral base of the 5th metatarsal bone.
Action
Weak plantar flexor of the ankle joint; eversion of the foot.
Nerve supply
Superficial peroneal nerve (L5 and S1)
Blood supply
From proximal to distal, the muscle belly is supplied by muscular branches from the fibular (peroneal) artery and anterior lateral malleolar artery. The tendon receives blood from the peroneal perforating artery, anterior lateral malleolar artery, lateral calcaneal artery, lateral tarsal artery, and lateral plantar artery.
