Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the short muscle that straightens the toes. The word extensor comes from the Latin ex meaning “out from” and tendere meaning “to stretch.”The term digitorum is from the Latin digitus, which originally meant the “pointing thing,” a term that is similar to the Sanskrit word “dic” meaning to show or point out. Because we point with our fingers the term was applied to the fingers and then the toes.Brevis is the Latin term meaning “short.” This is being used as a comparative reference to a longer muscle that does the same thing.

Dorsolateral surface of the calcaneus and the talocalcaneal ligament.
Insertion
Lateral border of the tendons of the extensor digitorum longus muscle to the second, third, and fourth toes.
Action
Assists with extension of second, third, and fourth toes.

Deep peroneal nerve (L5 and S1)
Blood supply
The perforating branch of the peroneal artery, anterior lateral malleolar artery, lateral tarsal arteries, dorsalis pedis artery, arcuate artery, second and third dorsal metatarsal arteries, and dorsal digital arteries.
