Etymology
In English this muscle’s name is the short muscle that bends the big toe. The word flexor comes from the Latin flectere meaning “to bend.”The term hallucis is from the Latin hallux, which originally arose from the Greek halmos meaning “to leap or spring.” The big toe was so-named because of its functional role in leaping.Brevis is the Latin term meaning “short.” This is being used as a comparative reference to a longer muscle that does the same thing.
Origin
Medial plantar surface of the cuboid bone and the adjacent aspect of the lateral cuneiform bone.
Insertion
Two heads, with each head attaching to the side of the base of proximal phalanx of big toe (there are sesamoid bones in each of the tendons near their attachment).
Action
Flexion of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe.
Nerve supply
Medial plantar nerve (S1 and S2)
Blood supply
The medial plantar artery and first plantar metatarsal artery supply blood to the muscle.
