Etymology
The muscle’s name in English is the square muscle of the sole of the foot. The word quadratus comes from the Latin quadrus meaning “square.”The word plantaris is from the Latin planta for “the sole of the foot,” which comes from the Greek plata meaning “flat.”
Origin
Concave medial surface of the calcaneus (medial head); long plantar ligament and distal surface of the calcaneal tuberosity (lateral head).
Insertion
Lateral edge of the flexor digitorum longus tendon before it splits.
Action
Assists with flexion of the small toes by correcting the oblique vector of the flexor tendon as it crosses the plantar surface of the foot.

Lateral plantar nerve (S1, S2, and S3)
Blood supply
Both medial and lateral plantar arteries supply the muscle along with small branches from the plantar arterial arch.
