Description

Situated just posterolateral to the foramen ovale, this hole can be viewed from above or below. This small, round opening transmits the middle meningeal artery along with the meningeal branch of the mandibular nerve.

Etymology

Foramen is the Latin term designating a hole-like opening. It is derived from the Latin forare meaning to bore or perforate. Spinosum, from the Latin spina meaning thorn, refers to its location next to the spine of the sphenoid bone.
