Other Terms: Lamina lateralis (Processus pterygoideus), Lateral lamina of pterygoid process, Lateral plate of sphenoid, Lamina lateralis processi pterygoideus ossis sphenoidalis
This is the thin lateral plate of the pterygoid process that broadens and turns outward in its inferior aspect. The lateral pterygoid muscle attaches to its lateral surface and the medial pterygoid muscle attaches to its medial surface.
The term lamina is Latin for plate, leaf, or thin scale, while pterygoid comes from the Greek pteryx meaning wing and eidos denotes shape.
