Description
This is the thin lateral plate of the pterygoid process that broadens and turns outward in its inferior aspect. The lateral pterygoid muscle attaches to its lateral surface and the medial pterygoid muscle attaches to its medial surface.
Etymology
The term lamina is Latin for plate, leaf, or thin scale, while pterygoid comes from the Greek pteryx meaning wing and eidos denotes shape.
