This medial plate-like process is narrower and longer than its lateral counterpart with Its lower end curving into a hook-shaped process. Attached to its lateral surface are the tensor veli palatini and medial pterygoid muscles, while its medial surface forms the lateral boundary of the posterior nasal choanae and provides attachment for the pharyngeal constrictor muscle.

The term lamina is Latin for plate, leaf, or thin scale, while pterygoid comes from the Greek pteryx meaning wing and eidos denotes shape.
