Description
The mandibular nerve is one of the three branches of the trigeminal nerve. It is the largest branch of the trigeminal nerve. It contains all of the motor fibers for the trigeminal nerve. The motor portion of the nerve supplies the mastication muscles. The sensory portion supplies the salivary glands, anterior portions of the tongue, gums, mandibular teeth, and the skin o the temples. The mandibular nerve contains an anterior and posterior trunk. The anterior trunk branches are: buccal nerve, masseteric nerve, deep temporal nerves, and the nerve to the lateral pterygoid. The posterior trunk branches are: auriculotemporal nerve, lingual nerve, and the inferior alveolar nerve. Other branches of the mandibular nerve are the meningeal nerve and nerve to medial pterygoid.
