Inferior epigastric artery

Other Terms: Arteria epigastrica inferior, Artère épigastrique inférieure

The inferior epigastric artery runs upward and medially from midway between the anterior superior spine of the ilium and the symphysis pubis toward the umbilicus. Its line is frequently given from the point of junction of the medial and middle thirds of the inguinal ligament to the umbilicus. The line has a slight medial curve and crosses the lateral edge of the rectus muscle at a point about one-third of the distance between the symphysis pubis and the umbilicus. It passes behind the lateral part of the inguinal canal, immediately to the medial side of the abdominal inguinal ring.
