Peroneal (fibular) artery
Other Terms: Fibular artery, Arteria peronea, Arteria fibularis, Artère fibulaire
The peroneal artery arises from the posterior tibial artery about two and a half centimeters below the lower border of the popliteus muscle. It is the largest branch off of the posterior tibial artery. After passing to the lateral side of the leg, it runs downward along the posterior medial surface of the fibula and at the distal third of the leg it pierces the interosseous membrane. Throughout most of its course the vessel lies within the substance of the flexor hallucis longus muscle, and is covered by the fIbular origin of the soleus.
